Ireland full-back makes it a clean sweep at Wolves end-of-season awards night

Matt Doherty brought home Players’ Player of the Season, Fan’s Player of the Season and Goal of the Season last night.

IT’S BEEN A pretty decent year for Irish full-back Matt Doherty.

As well as becoming a regular in the Wolves backline, the 24-year-old former Belvedere and Home Farm schoolboy was called into Ireland’s senior squad for the first time in March.

The Championship club held their end-of-season awards night and Dubliner Doherty cleaned up by winning a hat-trick of gongs — Players’ Player of the Season, Fan’s Player of the Season and Goal of the Season for his long-range effort against Fulham.

It was unexpected to be honest,” Doherty said afterwards. “I didn’t think I’d make it a clean sweep like that.

“I was a bit shocked but absolutely delighted. I thought the goal might win it but I didn’t think I was going to win the Players’ Player so when my name was read out I was a bit shocked at the time.”
