English bounced back from recent setbacks. Martin Rickett

It was a great weekend for Mark English at the star-studded Anniversary Games in London

The 22-year-old ran an Olympic qualifying time.

MARK ENGLISH PUT his recent poor form behind him to finish fourth in the 800m at the London Anniversary Games on Saturday.

The UCD medical student was disappointment with his performance at the recent European U23 Championships where he failed to finish on the podium but bounced back in spectacular fashion at the Olympic Stadium yesterday.

The 22-year-old was part of a high-calibre field but held his own to record a time of 1.45.49 and qualify for Rio 2016.

English bided his time before finishing strongly down the home straight to finish behind eventual race winner Nigel Amos, world record holder David Rudisha and Adam Kszczot.

The European indoor silver medallist was part of a strong Irish team to compete at the Diamond League meet in London over the weekend.

Thomas Barr finished sixth in the 400m hurdles, although Mary Cullen was unable to run a World Championship qualifying time in the 5,000m.

Six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt returned to the scene of his 2012 triumph to win the 100m on Friday while Mo Farah won the 3,000m.
