MARC Ó SÉ has lauded the contribution of ‘ultimate teammate’ Paul Galvin to the Kerry cause and admits it was a surprise that the 34 year-old retired from the inter-county scene.
“Of course it was a surprise. He made the decision to come back this year, he was looking at the half-back line as a place where he needed a new challenge.

“He played a few games and he probably found the going tough. Maybe he felt he wasn’t able to perform to the levels he was before. Paul is a real honest guy and he’s the type of fella that if he felt he wasn’t able to continue the way he was then he wasn’t going to do it.
It is very disappointing that he’s gone but you can respect his decision. He was the ultimate teammate really, he was a fella you would love to go to war with – a great friend, a great character. He was a great fella inside in the dressing-room, especially for the younger lads because he would never ask a younger fella to do something he wouldn’t do himself.”
Ó Sé himself returned to train with the Kerry team last night after missing their opening two league defeats to Dublin and Derry. He could potentially be available for their trip to face Castlebar in Mayo on March 2nd as Kerry go in search of badly-needed league points.
Despite now being the oldest member of the squad following the retirements of his brother Tomás and Galvin, Marc is relishing the upcoming campaign.
“I’m the eldest now. I’m nearly 34 but it’s more important how you feel and if you feel good, you keep on going. Eamonn kind of gave me an extended break, that I’d have the first two league games off.
“I was doing a bit on my own. The last time I missed a league game was 2009 when I hurt my knee and I missed two or three games. The time before that was when Gaeltacht were in the All-Ireland club championships in 2004. I’ve missed very little league time so this was a kind of a nice break to get.”
