Last night's U21 Manchester derby was marred by crowd trouble

16,708 spectators took advantage of the free entry permitted for the match.

MAN UNITED U21S’ 4-0 victory over neighbours City was overshadowed by crowd trouble involving rival groups of fans at Old Trafford last  night.

16,708 spectators took advantage of the free entry permitted for the match, with violence occurring following United’s third goal in the game’s dying stages.

Punches were thrown, with the problems beginning after two fans appeared to be thrown out by stewards.

The Daily Mail reports that the violence, which was understood to involve only a small minority, continued after the game, with players having to be protected by police and reports of further clashes outside the ground.

In the match itself, goals from Adnan Januzaj, James Wilson, Ashley Fletcher and Matthew Willock ensured an easy victory for the hosts, who are on the brink of winning the U21 Premier League title.
