Michael Carrick's first-team opportunities at United have been limited since Jose Mourinho took charge of the club.

'Manchester City should sign Carrick in January'

Tim Sherwood feels “Manchester United’s Andrea Pirlo” would be an upgrade on Fernando and Fernandinho.

MANCHESTER CITY SHOULD launch an audacious January swoop for Michael Carrick, according to Tim Sherwood.

The midfielder, who has struggled for starts under Jose Mourinho this season, was described as “Manchester United’s Andrea Pirlo” by Owen Hargreaves after impressing alongside Paul Pogba in a 4-1 win over Fenerbahce.

Sherwood, who was working as a pundit for ITV, feels Carrick should be first name on the teamsheet for “every Premier League side” and would be an upgrade on City’s midfield options.

“If he needs one touch, that’s all he takes — there is no self-indulgence with Michael,” Sherwood said.

Michael Carrick would be the first name on the teamsheet on every single Premier League team. Manchester City are crying out for a Michael Carrick.

“They have Fernando or Fernandinho in there, who are good at what they do, but they can’t do what he can do. They can’t link the play like Michael Carrick.

“Pep Guardiola, at Barcelona, had Sergio Busquets doing that and Xabi Alonso at Bayern Munich. Michael Carrick is a replicate of those two players. If United don’t want to play him, Man City will buy him in January.”
