Mackay only became the Wigan manager in November of last year. Richard Sellers

After picking up just 19 points from 72, football's greatest lover of banter is out of a job

It has all gone wrong for Malky Mackay.

MALKY MACKAY’S TENURE as Wigan manager generated a lot of scrutiny before he had been in charge of a single game after text messages were released earlier in the season that allegedly showed the Scot making racist, homophobic and sexist remarks.

Not really the three things you want to be associated with but Wigan’s performances under Mackay seemed to deflect attention back to on-pitch matters… but not in a good way.

After taking the job in November, Wigan failed to win a home league game under Mackay and picked up just 19 points from a possible 72 after he took charge.

Unsurprisingly, the former Cardiff boss was relieved of his duties today as the Latics lie eight points off Championship safety with 5 matches left.

Who would have thought it would all go wrong after Mackay’s innovative first training session?
