Everyone thinks Louis van Gaal was sacked this morning - but Man United have said nothing yet

Here’s looking at Mou, kid…

MANCHESTER UNITED REMAINED silent this afternoon amid widespread reports that they have sacked manager Louis van Gaal.

United were expected to release a statement at 1pm to confirm van Gaal’s departure, paving the way for Jose Mourinho’s imminent appointment later this week.

But the Old Trafford club have yet to make any official comment following a meeting with van Gaal, where details of his severance package were reportedly agreed.

The Dutchmman was joined by his lawyer at United’s Carrington training facility to finalise details of the payoff, thought to be worth £5 million, and clear the way for Mourinho to take charge.

Van Gaal guided United to the FA Cup on Saturday, the club’s first major trophy since Alex Ferguson’s retirement, but the post-match celebrations were overshadowed by instantaneous reports that he was set to lose his job.

Although there was still a year left on the three-year deal he signed when he replaced David Moyes, overwhelming fan opposition to his style of play and lack of success forced the United board to cut their losses.

Leaving the team hotel on Sunday morning, he cryptically told reporters that “it’s over.”

Mourinho and his agent Jorge Mendes are expected to finalise details of his appointment tomorrow, with an official announcement due to be made on Wednesday.
