Full-time: Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Bohemians

Good evening all and welcome along to our Friday night Premier Division coverage. We’re in Dublin 24 for the big one as current champions Shamrock Rovers welcome along their fiercest rivals Bohemians.

It’s a mild night in Tallaght Stadium and kick off is in 15 minutes.

Here’s how the two teams will line up:

Shamrock Rovers: Jansson, Sives, Dennehy, Oman, Gilbert, Rice, Greene, Turner, Finn, Twigg, Brennan. Subs: Hawkins, Pieterse, Kavanagh, Gartland, McCormack, Gannon.

Bohemians: McNulty, Heary, Pender, McMillan, Harney, Mulcahy, Martin, Moore, Scully, Joyce, Traynor. Subs: Ward, McMahon, Corcoran, O’Connor, Lopes, Stewart, Sexton.

Billy Dennehy and Gary Twigg tip off and we’re underway. Rovers shooting from left to right.

First notable chance and it’s for the Hoops. Dennehy cuts back onto his left before crossing from the right flank and Chris Turner gets his head onto it.

The midfielder can’t direct the ball goalward however, and gets treatment after taking a knock to the head.

Bohs string a couple of passes together and Adam Martin receives the ball in the opposing box. Before he gets a chance to offload, referee Richie Winter gives a free out for handball.

An excellent opportunity for the Hoops to take the lead has just gone begging. Ronan Finn breaks from a central position and slips in Twigg, whose first touch takes him by two opponents.

The Scot attempts to side foot past Andy McNulty but ends up shooting straight at the stopper before Kerrea Gilbert, who is at right full-back balloons over with the second attempt.

Ah, the joys of seeing your laptop stall midgame. A couple of minutes worth of play to catch up on.

  • Rovers have the ball in the back of the net but it’s disallowed. Twigg and Aaron Greene play a one-two and the former finds the bottom corner but is penalised for the ball hitting his hand.
  • The Gypsies see an Adam Martin header sail over after a decent delivery from former Rovers player Karl Moore.
  • Finn dances his way past a couple of challenges but holds onto the ball too long and is dispossessed just outside the Bohs box.
  • Killian Brennan, playing at left full-back for the second week in a row in place of the suspended Conor Powell, chops down Danny Joyce but Moore’s free-kick is over-hit and leads to nothing.

Now, we’re up to speed…

Finn lets fly from 25 yards out and although it looks marginally too high, McNulty makes sure by touching over. When the corner is delivered, Owen Heary goes down and Bohs are let off.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, three more games have just kicked off:

Drogheda United 0-0 Derry

Cork City 0-0 Bray Wanderers

UCD 0-0 Monaghan United

Shelbourne take on St Pat’s at Tolka at 8pm in the other fixture.

Half-time: Shamrock Rovers 0-0 Bohemians

Gilbert wins a free-kick in the corner and Dennehy’s delivery will be the last action of the half…

Some of the crowd think the ball has gone in but when the crowd of bodies move, McNulty emerges with it in hand.

And we’re back. Bohemians get their second corner in quick succession when Craig Sives gets a vital touch to put behind with Dave Scully looking to break onto Adam Martin’s cross on the ground.

Ryan Brennan, brother of Killian, has put Drogheda one up at Hunky Dorys Park while former Rovers striker Tadgh Purcell scores for Cork City, who lead Bray by one goal to nil.

Meanwhile back in Tallaght, Chris Turner’s volley is too high and Oscar Jansson has a low drive from Karl Moore covered.

Keith Ward has come on for Danny Joyce just after Moore got free down the left flank but Jansson was quick off his line to snuff out the danger.

Gary Twigg has just headed over from Dennehy’s ball as Rovers look to turn the screw.

Turner is the first player in Mr Winter’s book for a late tackle on Ward. Heary rises highest to reach the set-piece but the header is a weak one.

Stephen Kenny decides to make a change and it’s Gary O’Neill who comes in for Stephen Rice.

At Tolka Park meanwhile, Brendan McGill has put Shelbourne in front in their game with St Pat’s.

The away side getting some joy in the final third during the last couple of minutes. Scully isn’t far away with a shot when Moore finds him with a pass.

Scully then turns provider with a cross to the back post, which Moore eventually gets on the end of but dwells on the ball too long.

Rovers make two more throws of the dice as Daryl Kavanagh enters the fray for Aaron Greene and Sean Gannon replaces Gilbert.

GOAL! Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Bohemians (Gary Twigg)

With the Rovers fans beginning to grow restless, they take the lead. Finn takes possession 20 yards out and after a step-over, curls the ball into the path of Twigg. And there’s no matter man to kill it with his first touch and stroke home for his fifth league goal of the season.

12 minutes to play.

Dinny Corcoran is on for Scully and John O’Connor comes in to replace Derek Pender with time running out for the Gypsies to snatch a point.

Former Bohs striker Christy Fagan has scored his first league goal for new club Pat’s, who are level with Shelbourne at half-time.

Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Bohemians (Billy Dennehy)

That’s game, set and match. O’Neill advances on the right hand side and squares to Kavanagh, who in turn picks out the unmarked Dennehy.

The winger makes no mistake of it and drills low past McNulty into the bottom corner.

Full-time: Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Bohemians

So Rovers eventually deliver but there was a scary moment right before their second when substitute Dinny Corcoran clipped the post with a lob. The Hoops stay top while their rivals, who should be proud of their performance on the night, remain rooted to the bottom.

That’s it from me but check back in for a round up of all tonight’s Premier Division action once they all finish.
