Linfield hit out at media coverage, dismiss former Celtic player's remarks

The club are not happy with some of the reporting in relation to their potential Champions League tie with the Scottish champions.

LINFIELD HAVE HIT out at media coverage of their potential Champions League tie with Celtic and criticised the remarks of one former player in particular.

The Northern Irish side are widely expected to beat La Fiorita of San Marino in their opening Champions League qualifier, which would pave the way for a clash with the Scottish champions.

The prospective tie has received plenty of media coverage, with Celtic last week confirming they would not take a ticket allocation for the first leg in Belfast should the game take place.

Meanwhile, Linfield have released a statement expressing their frustration with some of the reporting on the potential game in recent days.

The Irish League club cited one article in particular that appeared in Scottish newspaper the Daily Record as “regrettable”.

In the piece in question, Joe Miller, a former Celtic player, is quoted as describing a 1995 friendly he claims to have played for Aberdeen against Linfield at Windsor Park.

He told the newspaper of an “intimidating” atmosphere during the match, in which “there were red dots on us for the whole 90 minutes”.

However, Linfield hit back, claiming they have no record of the match in question ever taking place, and suggesting they have never played against Aberdeen during their entire history as a football club.

They also questioned Miller’s claims that himself and fellow Aberdeen players were confronted by a group of angry Linfield supporters while walking down a street near Windsor Park and added that they have “instructed Solicitors to write to Mr Miller and the Daily Record accordingly”.

The Daily Record have yet to comment on Linfield’s response to the article.
