Limerick must find a ground to play at before the LOI season starts in 3 weeks

Markets Field won’t be ready for the opening month due to concerns over health and safety.

LIMERICK FC ARE without a ground for the upcoming SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season after confirming this evening that Markets Field will not be ready on time.

The Munster club were expected to make a return to their spiritual home when the new league campaign begins next month, having played at Thomond Park for the past two years since returning to the top flight.

However, in a statement released tonight, club chairman Pat O’Sullivan revealed that it will be not be available for at least three weeks.

“I regret that as Chairman of Limerick FC that I must announce that the Markets Field will not be available to the club for the month of March 2015 due to circumstances beyond our control,” O’Sullivan said. “We will continue to work closely with the LEDP (Limerick Enterprise Development Partnership) to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.

“The club is making alternative arrangements to play the games that had been scheduled for the Markets Field.

We must now work to ensure that the Markets Field is speedily brought into use and I look for all and everyone’s support to this end.”

While a specific reason for the delay hasn’t been given, the LEDP says there are concerns over healthy and safety.

“Having consulted with the design team, contractors, the local authority and statutory bodies, LEDP in conjunction with the related parties has decided that due to Health and Safety and initial capacity concerns that the Markets Field Stadium will not be available for play in the short term.”

Limerick are scheduled to take on Bohemians at home in their opening fixture on 7 March.
