A big triumph for John Kiely’s side today.

GEAROID HEGARTY PRODUCED a storming display to inspire Limerick to an impressive victory away to Cork this afternoon and book a place in this year’s Allianz hurling league semi-finals.

Hegarty, deputising as Limerick captain for the day instead of James Ryan, scored 0-4 – including a brilliant second-half sideline cut – along with setting up Limerick’s first-half goal that was clinically finished by David Dempsey.

The tall full-forward was the perfect focal point in attack for John Kiely’s Limerick team, who finished strongly in front of 7,892 spectators in Páirc Uí Rinn.

With the teams tied at 1-17 apiece in the 66th minute, Limerick made a burst for the finish line with Kyle Hayes, Hegarty and substitute John Fitzgibbon all splitting the posts from play.

A late converted ’65 from Mark Coleman was all Cork could summon in response as Kieran Kingston’s side saw their league campaign grind to a halt.

Shane Dowling was also in exceptional free-taking form for the winners as he struck 0-9 overall – eight from placed balls – while youngsters Cian Lynch and Hayes chipped in with a brace of points apiece.

Patrick Horgan top scored for Cork with 0-8, including seven frees, and while Luke Meade, Seamus Harnedy and Alan Cadogan caught the eye in the scoring stakes at times, Cork could never forge a decisive advantage in the second half.

The teams were tied 1-8 apiece at the break. Limerick had made an opening burst, in front 1-5 to 0-3 by the 15th minute. The goal was engineered by Hegarty in the 11th minute and David Dempsey provided the clinical finish.

Yet Cork rallied to score 1-5 without reply as Alan Cadogan tormented the Limerick rearguard and Luke Meade held his nerve to fire home a 26th minute goal after he was found in space by Lorcan McLoughlin.

The second-half was an extremely tight affair with the teams level on six occasions. Extra-time looked a real prospect but Limerick put together a decisive run of scores to propel them into a semi-final clash with Galway.

Scorers for Limerick: Shane Dowling 0-9 (0-8f), Gearoid Hegarty 0-4 (0-1 sideline), David Dempsey 1-1, Cian Lynch, Kyle Hayes 0-2 each, Alan Dempsey, John Fitzgibbon 0-1 each.

Scorers for Cork: Patrick Horgan 0-8 (0-7f), Luke Meade 1-1, Seamus Harnedy 0-3, Alan Cadogan, Mark Coleman (0-1 ’65) 0-2 each, Bill Cooper, Anthony Nash (0-1f) 0-1 each.
