'20 years of how he's managed the club shouldn't be discarded': Brady defends Wenger

LIAM BRADY HAS once again underlined his unwavering support for Arsene Wenger amid calls for the Arsenal manager to step down after two decades in the job.

The Frenchman’s future is clouded in uncertainty after the Gunners failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 21 years, with the levels of discontent among the club’s support growing louder as the season progressed.

Wenger’s contract at the Emirates Stadium expires this summer but the 67-year-old, who has delivered three Premier Leagues and six FA Cups to North London, has remained defiant throughout despite facing protests from supporters over his future.

Speaking in Dublin this morning, former Arsenal midfielder Brady defended Wenger and said his achievements as manager since 1996 shouldn’t be discarded on the back of one season.

“I’ve gone on record, I would well and truly be in the Wenger camp.” he said.

“I think Alex Ferguson came out yesterday and said exactly how I feel: 20 years of how he’s managed the club, he shouldn’t be discarded by the fact we haven’t qualified for the Champions League.

“I know managers defend themselves by using certain things but we actually have a better total of points this season than we had last year and we finished second. It’s football isn’t it and fans have got to understand that.

“We don’t know if Arsene is going to stay, it’s still up in the air. Newspapers are saying he will and if he does, I’m happy.”

Brady also pointed to the added level of competition in the Premier League, citing the development of Manchester City and Chelsea into credible contenders for the title, as a factor supporters need to consider.

“That’s the competition that exists now in England and I think Everton will be on the scene. They’ve got money coming in which will enable them to be up there,” he added.
