Ireland's Leona Maguire wins major US college golf title

The 20-year old from Cavan continues to make waves in the States

CAVAN’S LEONA MAGUIRE continues to show why she is the number one ranked women’s collegiate golfer in the US with a stunning playoff win yesterday to become the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women’s Golf Individual Champion.

The Duke University freshman shot a 10-under par 206 to beat Virginia’s Briana Mao on the second hold of a sudden-death playoff at Sedgefield Country Club on Saturday.

“I’ve been playing pretty solid all year,” said Maguire. “It feels really good to get the win. To get an ACC title, it doesn’t really get much better than that.”

“It is as pretty much as dramatic as it gets.

“Me and Briana had a great battle all day today.  It was tied right up to the very end.  To come out on top, after such a long tournament and such tough weather conditions is just great.”

Maguire, along with sister Lisa, secured top marks in her Leaving Certificate last year, after which the pair were offered golf scholarships by Duke.

Yesterday’s win for Leona comes just weeks after her maiden victory in North Carolina this March.

Ireland, it seems, has yet another golfing star and she’s still only in first year in college.
