IRELAND’S LEONA MAGUIRE has won the British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, beating Ainhoa Olarra of Spain in Saturday’s matchplay final.
Maguire, the amateur world number one, won 3&2 at the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club in South Wales.
The 22-year-old Cavan native follows Antrim’s Stephanie Meadow who won the prestigious prize at Carnoustie in 2012.
Maguire got off to the best possible start against Olarra with four birdies on the front nine to take a three-hole lead into the turn.
And after losing the 10th, birdie-par on 11 and 12 was enough to give her a four-hole advantage with six to play.
Olarra didn’t give up and threatened to spoil the party with a birdie on the 15th, cutting Maguire’s lead to two holes with three to play.
But a par on 16 was enough to seal victory, Olarra’s bogey five handing Maguire the title.
