Mick McCarthy's Ipswich replace one Irish striker with another

Leon Best arrives to replace Daryl Murphy.

IPSWICH HAVE MOVED quickly to replace departed striker Daryl Murphy by bringing in another Irish striker on a one-year deal.

Leon Best has joined the Championship club after impressing manager Mick McCarthy during a trial period at Portman Road.

The 29-year-old signs as a free agent after being released by Rotherham United during the summer. Best’s arrival comes after the sale of fellow Irish international Murphy to Newcastle last week.

“Leon did well last week. I was impressed,” McCarthy told the club website.

“He knows this league. He’s got that physical presence and he will add to the options we have got up front. We are delighted to have him here.”

Best helped Rotherham avoid relegation last year, scoring four league goals, but didn’t renew terms with the Yorkshire club at the end of his contract.

The forward made seven appearances for Ireland after making his debut against Nigeria in May 2009.

McCarthy’s side lie 11th in the second tier after five games of the new season and face Reading when the league fixtures resume following the international break.
