Basquel fires Ballyboden in to Leinster semis, Portlaoise survive against 14-man Sarsfields

Here’s how the four Leinster football quarter-finals went today.

Portlaoise 2 – 5

Sarsfields 0 – 10

Portlaoise just about scraped their way in to the Leinster Senior Football Club Championship semi-finals with a win over Kildare’s Sarsfields who had to play the entire second half with just 14 men.

Stephen Lawlor picked up a second yellow card and the red late in the first half after a clash following a Portlaoise penalty.

Craig Rogers converted that chance to fire his side into a 1 – 2 0 – 3 lead. The Sash rallied before half-time and pulled level at 1 -2 to 0 – 5 with points from Ray Cahill and Sean Campbell.

The spirit of the under-manned side continued deep in to the second half and the Kildare men held on to a narrow lead until Paul Cahillane pounced to fire in Portlaoise’s second goal.

Yet still Sarsfields came back roaring and they battled their way to parity once more with three minutes on the clock. But their tally would be capped at 10 points and Brian Smith came up with the late winning point for the hosts in O’Moore Park.

Emmet Og Killoe 0 – 11

Navan O’Mahony’s 1 – 6

Emmet Og Killoe overturned a half-time deficit of 1- 3 to 0 – 4 to advance to the final four in Leinster club football.

With scores hard to come by, Ruairí Ó Coileáin’s 20th minute goal was a valuable one for O’Mahony’s in Pearse Park and it made all the difference in giving his side the upper hand at the break.

However, less than 10 minutes after the resumption, the Longford champions were level and once they opened up a two-point lead, they managed to use that cushion to see them through to a strong finish.

Rathnew 1 – 06

St Loman’s 2 – 10

Goals from David Windsor and Adam Gaffney bookended this quarter-final win for St Loman’s in Aughrim.

Windsor’s 15th minute goal ensured an uphill struggle for Rathnew as it put them 1 – 3 to no score behind. The Wicklow club did manage to raise a green flag of their own in the first half, but Stephen Byrne’s goal was one of only two scores registered before they went in trailing 1 – 6 to 1- 1 at half-time.

There was hushed talk of a comeback as Rathnew limited St Loman’s to a solitary score in the game’s third quarter and scratched to within a goal. However, it all unravelled from there on in for Rathnew as they were hit with two red cards and Gaffney’s late strike to seal their fate.

St Patrick’s 0 – 7

Ballyboden St Enda 1- 8

Colm Basquel’s goal early in the second half swung this game the Dubliners’ way.

Paddy Keenan kicked four points including a sensational first-half long-range effort to put the Louth club 0 – 4 to 0 – 3 ahead at the break in Drogheda.

Ballyboden roared out of the traps after the break however, Andrew Kerin pointed of his five of the day before Basquel tiled the advantage to the visitors.

From there on in, only Keenan got on the score-sheet for St Pats and Conal Keaney contributed two late scores to put Ballyboden beyond reach.
