Six Irish players involved between both teams as Preston frustrate Leeds at Elland Road

Sean Maguire featured in the PNE squad but had to settle for a place on the bench alongside Daryl Horgan.

MUCH HAS BEEN made of the growing Irish contingent at Preston North End these days and the Championship club named four in their squad for a clash with Leeds at Elland Road.

Two started the game – Greg Cunningham and Alan Browne – while both Daryl Horgan and Sean Maguire had to settle for places on the bench.

The former Cork City striker started the side’s league opener against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend but was on the bench for the midweek League Cup defeat to Accrington and Alex Neil was happy to keep him there for the trip to Yorkshire.

Leeds had Eunan O’Kane in midfield, fresh from signing a new four-year deal with the club, while they also included Galway native Conor Shaughnessy in their squad too.

But, despite having the better of it in the opening half, Preston were dealt a serious blow on the hour mark when Ben Pearson picked up a second yellow.

Reduced to 10 men, it was a case of keeping hold of what they had. Still, they very nearly picked up all three points in injury-time when Josh Harrop saw his effort tipped onto the crossbar by Felix Wiedwald.
