McGeady in demand: Leeds boss Steve Evans has confirmed his side’s interest in the Irish international, but says there is Premier League clubs hoping to acquire his services as well.

“Speaking to Aiden’s representatives, he may have options in the Premier League,” Evans told reporters.

“I do like Aiden McGeady but there has been no further chat with him in the last 10 days.

“That doesn’t mean we’re top of the league but we’re the big club that players look at.”

For a short period, Bryan Robson’s Middlesbrough were arguably the most exciting team in the Premier League as epitomised by the capture of Fabrizio Ravanelli.

Fresh off winning the Champions League with Juventus, Ravanelli joined Boro in a £7 million (€9 million) transfer.

The Italian international scored 17 goals in 35 appearances during his year in the Premier League, including a hat-trick on his debut against Liverpool. Ravanelli’s Middlesbrough reached the final of both domestic cup competitions, but lost out to Chelsea and Leicester respectively.

And despite Ravanelli’s prolific form, the club were relegated that season, and so the highest paid footballer in the Premier League at the time left to join Marseille in the summer.

Ravanelli returned to England with Derby in 2001, for whom he scored 14 goals in 49 appearances, and also had spells at Dundee, Lazio and Perugia among others. Since retiring, he has coached both Juventus’ youth team and French Ligue 1 side AC Ajaccio.
