Terrific scenes in the south-east as Waterford finally get their hands on the First Division title

Elsewhere, Cabinteely put six past a hapless Athlone Town.

ALREADY ASSURED OF the SSE Airtricity League First Division title, Waterford still did things the right way with a 1-0 win over Longford at the Regional Sports Centre tonight.

Second-half substitute David McDaid grabbed the only goal of the game with nine minutes left to the delight of the home crowd.

Favourites to finish the season as champions, Alan Reynolds’ side knew they had it wrapped up when Cobh Ramblers fell to Cabinteely last week and will now take their place in the top-flight for the first time since 2007.

Elsewhere this evening, Cobh suffered another loss to their nearest rivals UCD as Gary O’Neil struck the game-winner from the penalty spot.

Meanwhile, Cabo were big winners over a hapless Athlone Town.

Kieran Marty Waters conjured a hat-trick, Joe Doyle grabbed a brace while Ryan Swan was also on the mark as they put six past their beleaguered opposition.

Athlone scored two consolation goals late on but it was another night to forget for Roddy Collins’ side.

Meanwhile, Wexford Youths and Shelbourne played out a 1-1 draw.
