Waterford strengthen grip on promotion place as UCD and Cobh slip up

The Blues are six points clear at the top.

WATERFORD STRENGTHENED THEIR grip on top spot in SSE Airtricity League First Division with a 2-1 win at home to Wexford FC.

With promotion rivals Cobh Ramblers and UCD both failing to win on Friday night, the Blues came from behind against Wexford to open up a six-point gap at the top.

Dean Kelly had put the visitors in front a minute before the break but David McDaid levelled for Waterford from the penalty spot on the hour mark before Mark O’Sullivan headed the winner seven minutes later.

UCD were held to scoreless draw at home by Longford Town while in Stradbrook, Kieran Marty Waters goal in the opening minute set Cabinteely on their way to a 2-1 win over Cobh.

Paul Fox doubled Cabo’s advantage three minutes into the second half and although Cian Coleman quickly pulled one back for the visitors, Stephen Christopher’s red card on 72 minutes dented their hopes of a comeback.

Shelbourne moved up to fourth place with a 3-1 win away to Athlone Town, Adam Evans, Adam O’Connor and James English on the scoresheet for the visitors.
