Laois battle to retain their Division 1B status with win over Westmeath

Plus, the results from today’s Leinster minor hurling championship games.

LAOIS PUT THEIR disappointing league campaign behind them to secure a seven-point victory over Westmeath and retain their Division 1B status for another year.

PJ Scully scored ten points as Cheddar Plunkett’s side ran out 0-23 to 0-16 winners in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B promotion/relegation playoff in Tullamore.

The O’Moore County lost all five of their outings during the regular season, as well as an 11-point loss to Kerry in the relegation playoff, but produced when the pressure was on to keep their heads above water.

Conversely, there was heartbreak for Westmeath after they led by a point at half-time before ultimately falling away and limping to defeat.

Michael Ryan’s charges will play second-tier hurling for the first time in five years in 2017.

Cha Dwyer was the difference between the sides at O’Connor Park as he contributed six points in the closing stages to secure victory for Laois.
