Laois back on track after Armagh win as Derry narrowly see off Cavan

There were two clashes in Division 2 tonight.

LAOIS GOT THEIR Allianz football league campaign back on track tonight with a 1-13 to 0-15 win over Armagh at the Athletic Grounds in tonight’s Division 2 clash.

After the dejecting defeat they suffered against Galway in last Sunday’s opener, Laois needed a response and they got it in the shape of this success.

Paul Cahillane netted from the penalty spot to put Laois ahead 1-2 to 0-3 and that goal was a crucial score in the final analysis.

Cahillane, Kingston and Matthew Campion grabbed points for Laois in the opening period while Stefan Campbell and Gavin McParland were on target for Armagh.

It was 1-7 to 0-6 in favour of Laois at the interval and they had moved confidently ahead by seven points – 1-10 to 0-6 – by the 47th minute.

Armagh set about their task of reeling in Laois as they hit four points on the bounce – Micheal McKenna and Campbell central to that scoring spree.

When Ethan Rafferty pointed in the 60th minute, it was 1-11 to 0-13 in favour of Laois but Armagh could not draw level. They shipped two points in a row then to Evan O’Carroll and Kingston as Laois went ahead 1-13 to 0-13.

And despite two late Stefan Campbell points, Armagh could not force an equalising score.

A late pointed free by Mark Lynch gave Derry a 1-12 to 1-11 success over Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park.

It was Derry’s second win on the bounce after they saw off Fermanagh last Sunday while Cavan fell to a second successive loss following their defeat to Tyrone last week.

Cavan edged ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval but a Cailean O’Boyle goal early in the second-half spurred Derry on.

A Michael Argue goal midway through the second-half brought Cavan back on level terms at 1-8 apiece.

Derry went ahead 1-11 to 1-9 with nine minutes remaining before points from Gearoid McKiernan and Seanie Johnston brought Cavan level before Lynch notched his winning score.
