Klopp takes the blame for Liverpool's surprise FA Cup exit

The Reds return to Premier League action on Tuesday when they host Chelsea.

Updated 15:50

LIVERPOOL MANAGER JURGEN Klopp accepted his side had been “very bad” after second-tier Wolverhampton Wanderers knocked them out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Anfield on Saturday.

Defeat in this fourth-round tie meant Liverpool, 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, had been knocked out of two cup competitions in a matter of four days following their 2-0 aggregate loss to Southampton in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday.

Wolves’s Richard Stearman stunned the home crowd by putting the visitors 1-0 up inside the first minute when he headed in a free-kick.

And four minutes before half-time, the Championship club doubled their lead when Andreas Weimann finished off an excellent counter-attack.

But, having rarely threatened, a much-changed Liverpool pulled a goal back when Divock Origi scored from close range with four minutes left following a corner.

That, however, was good as it got for Liverpool, who have now won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions following a bright start to the season.

“We were very bad,” Klopp told BT Sport. “We started badly and it didn’t really get better. Everyone saw it. There are not a lot of good things to say about this game. It’s difficult to explain.”

As for the changes to his side, Klopp said: “I am responsible for the line-up. I am not allowed to blame a single player.”

Liverpool’s next game is a daunting league match at home to league leaders Chelsea on Tuesday and Klopp challenged his side to bounce back at Stamford Bridge.

“It doesn’t make it easier for Chelsea, that game is not decided already,” Klopp insisted. I”t’s up to us and if we play better we have a chance. If we don’t, we don’t have a chance.”

For Wolves, victory gave them a second Premier League scalp in this season’s FA Cup after they knocked Stoke City out in the third round and manager Paul Lambert said: “I think from the off we started well and counter-attacked.

“We’ll enjoy the ride. We might get dismantled in the next game but the last two (FA Cup) games have been unbelievable.”

@thomas walsh: bit dramatic. From the footage I saw, woman holding sign (stagnant and made of cardboard) and looking the opposite direction, into which the rider cycled.

@Kevin Norris: you left out the bit where she was on the road and the only path for the rider was straight ahead.

@Kevin Norris: she was completely reckless and only thinking of herself. People were injured because of her selfishness. She should pay the price

@seanieP: sure that’s so ambiguous it could mean that the woman involved could sue the cyclist, standing on a public road, if they want to sue then the roads should be closed to the public.

@guineon: ah come on now. There was a race she was well aware of happening and shouldn’t be in the road. It’s her recklessness.
Would you apply the same logic if someone popped out in front of usain bolt with a sign on the track mid pelt and he ran into them. Bolts fault I guess….. he should have just hurdled her.

@Mark Sheehan: what’s ambiguous? The definition of assault?
Was the the cause of impact intentional or reckless by the cyclist ? I never made comment on whether someone should be sued. I chimed in over a debate on assault.

@Mark Sheehan: also do all public roads need to be physically closed off to pedestrians.
Regardless of a race or not should people be standing in them wether or not they are ‘public’? The m50 is a public road sure go stand on that with a sign. Might try and sue the motorist if survive.

@guineon: how, the only path he could take was straight ahead as seen by the fact that when he went a few inches to the left he collided with other cyclists. Other cyclists that were meant to be there i might add.
