LIVERPOOL MANAGER JURGEN Klopp slammed referee Craig Pawson for the controversial penalty decision that allowed Everton to escape with a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.
Klopp was furious that Pawson awarded a 77th-minute spot-kick for Dejan Lovren’s barge into Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Wayne Rooney converted the penalty to claim his first Merseyside derby goal and cancel out Mohamed Salah’s superb first-half opener.
“I don’t understand why the ref is doing that. Lovren doesn’t make a challenge. Calvert-Lewin makes a step. The hand is on the back,” Klopp said in a tetchy television interview.
“If you think it is a penalty say so. Does my opinion change anything? I only want to speak to people with a little bit of understanding about football. I am sorry, I am wrong and you are right. Obviously I am not in the mood to answer questions.”
Klopp’s surprise decision to rest in-form forwards Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino back-fired, but the German refused to accept any blame, opting to criticise Everton for a defensive display.
“Only one team is trying over 95 minutes to win it. The other team are not in our box and didn’t have a shot on target bar the penalty,” he said.
“Our performance was good. We didn’t score often enough. I saw only one team playing. I can’t believe the situation with all the challenges. We were clean and didn’t make any fouls. There is always one nasty one — Sigurdsson made that. A clear red card.”
On his team changes, Klopp added: “Twenty-one days, seven games. We can push them through until one is injured and then people say the squad is not deep enough. The players who came on did a brilliant job.”
Not sure why him and Lovren were so angry after the game as it was clearly a penalty. Might have been a little bit soft but Lovren clearly shoved Calvert-Lewin in the back.
@Dan Smith: he should be angry with lovren not the ref
@Dan Smith: I don’t even think it was that soft. He didn’t seem to go down that easy. Crazy stuff from Lovern. Bet I’m the first person this season to say that sentence……
@Dan Smith: true, its soft and some refs give them some dont so its not suprising its a peno!
@Dan Smith: if that’s a penalty then there should be about 6 penos a game. I think that’s the problem, consistency.
@Dan Smith: Very soft pen. He runs towards Lovren and goes down under the inevitable contact. If Lovren keeps his hands by his sides its no pen.
@Dan: he put his hands on him, as simple as that…. no hands no penalty.
@Mick Power: think he’s venting frustration tbh
@Graham: it’s s contact sport, putting a hand on a players back is not a foul. Diving when you feel a touch on your back is a bookable offense.
@Dan Smith: No, have another look, the blue fella clearly moved back against the red fella and then fell like a sack of spuds. Simple
Klopp is a spoofer and he’s being found out week in and week out.
@Insider at RTE: what weeks are they?
@Mick Power: I must have missed those weeks in the middle of him signing Mane and Salah, getting to the champions league knockout stages and a fantastic run of results in the league
@Insider at RTE: he’s clearly improved Liverpool and they’ll be likely in the top 4 the next few years despite cheap skate owners.
Sadly it appears they’ll yet again peak as a club when there’s a great team around. Can’t see any team being ahead of man city the next few years.
As another long suffering pool fan it has to be said that klopp is talking pure drivel here. It was a definite penalty, an absolutely ridiculous piece of defending by the worst centre half in the league.
Maybe starting our best team and not leaving them on midweek when the score is 7-0 would make sense. Take some responsibility for your own mistakes and stop blaming referees. The goalkeepers, moreno and lovren all have to go, if even to keep the fans happy. And finally starting solanke was an absolute brain dead managerial decision
@Sean Lawlor: Showed very poor management during the week. Should have taken off players after 55mins, opposition was muck.
I think that was Klop just appeasing the home fans and massaging his own ego!
It’s a penalty! End of…..
As a die hard pool fan , u start your best team in a derby , 1-0 u don’t take your in form player off n 3rd ly u accept the breaks ,
@Pat: spot on. Too soon for Solanke to be starting a big game with Firmino and Coutinho available
Lovren is a hanbag. Calamities always around when he plays. Klopp would want to look in tje mirror and not at Craig Pawson. Coutinho Firmino Can starts with Salah and Mané it would of been game set and match at half time. Resting player’s for West Brom game. FFS !
@Jim Demps: Nah pal City stuffing Mourinho and his Mancs and ending the unbeatean run. Now that’s Brillo just Brillo ! Answer’s on a post card chicky !
@Is mise muc gránna: how do you expect them to do their lap of honour against Brom if they’re all too tired
@Buddy Bud: Tick Tock Tick Tock
@Is mise muc gránna: ??????
@Is mise muc gránna: Wazzaaaaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!
@powerfix: I suppose after the Lukaku show, you’ll be staying in Liverpool threads tonight?
@Graham: and it happens again
@powerfix: I see your bringing Liverpool to the United threads now….
Hilarious! Shades of Kevin Keegan about this guy and exactly why Liverpool will never win anything of substance with him in charge. Far too emotional and fails the see the obvious that his defense and goalkeeper are absolute pony.
Up the ev
@blueman79: while a bad result for Liverpool, the highlight of Everton’s season.
@Graham: not really but I’ll take the point seein as no one gave us a chance all week… and klippity’s head falling off in the interview , The only man in the world who thought that wasn’t a pen …. seriously made a bigger tool of himself than he already is… while big Sam sits back and laughs , pint of gravy in hand
It would take two hands on a back and a full on two handed hard push to make a player go down like he did, went down like he was hit with a sledgehammer. One light hand on a back doesn’t do that.
He should’ve made those wholesale changes against Maribor. Hindsight I know but you keep your top 11 for games of this nature.
He could play the James McEvoy role in Split the musical. Bit of a weirdo it has to be said.
