Biggest championship win ever? Wexford score 71 unanswered points past Kilkenny

You’ve got to feel for the Kilkenny players.

KILKENNY’S RETURN TO the Leinster minor football championship proved to be a hugely chastening experience as they suffered one of the heaviest defeats imaginable.

The Cats, who returned to the competition after an absence of a couple of years, were on the wrong-end of a 17-20 to 0-0 scoreline as Wexford romped to victory.

The writing was on the wall for the home side from the outset as they conceded two goals inside the opening minutes at Nowlan Park and they were unable to stem the flow.

Wexford showed little mercy as they racked up score after score to begin their campaign in emphatic fashion.

You can’t help but feel for Kilkenny, however, on what was an incredibly difficult afternoon in the fledgling careers of their young players.

Elsewhere in Round 1, there were wins for Dublin, Meath, Louth, Westmeath and Kildare.

Saturday’s results:

  • Kilkenny 0-0 Wexford 17-20
  • Dublin 2-14 Offaly 1-7
  • Meath 0-11 Laois 1-06
  • Kildare 2-16 Wicklow 0-7
  • Carlow 1-8 Louth 1-14
  • Westmeath 3-19 Longford 0-12
