It will be the sixth All-Ireland senior hurling decider featuring Kilkenny and Galway (including the two games in 2012) with the Cats having triumphed in 1975, 1979, 1993 and 2012.
Galway’s solitary final success over Kilkenny came in 1988 when they won out by 1-12 to 0-9.
That 1988 win was Galway’s last triumph in an All-Ireland final whereas Kilkenny are chasing an 11th title win in the 17 seasons that Brian Cody has been in charge.
