They move up to third place, knowing that a win in their game in hand at home to Meath next Sunday would leave them just a point behind Division 2 leaders Down.
For Kildare, it’s a much bleaker picture. They remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just one win from five games.
Early goals from Eamonn Callaghan and Fionn Dowling helped Kildare to an early six-point lead, 2-6 to 0-6, but Roscommon fought back in the second quarter to go in at half-time just three down, 2-9 to 0-12.
It was a different contest in the second half. Roscommon took their points with relative ease while snuffing out the Kildare threat and holding the visitors to just three points.
In Salthill, Cavan came from behind to take the two points from their clash with Galway.
The Tribesmen led 0-7 to 0-2 at the break but couldn’t build on that advantage as Cavan, who missed a penalty as well, picked off their points for an 0-12 to 0-10 win.
Terry Hyland’s side are now joint-second on five points, though they have played a game more than both Meath and Roscommon, while Galway remain a point back on four.
