“On behalf of the County Board, I would like to wish Kieran all the very best in his new position,” said County chairman Gerard Lane.
“He joins a long list of distinguished Cork managers, and brings with him a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach.
I would like to thank all the candidates who expressed an interest in the position, and also the members of the appointments committee for their endeavours.”
Hailing from the Tracton club, Kingston served as a selector under Barry-Murphy until work commitments forced him to step down at the end of the 2014 season.
As a manager, the 52-year-old guided his club to the final of the Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship in 2010, where they were beaten by Ballymartle.
During his playing career, Kingston won three Munster titles (1985, ’86 and ’90) with his county and two All-Irelands (1986 and ’90).
Kingston will be tasked with ending the county’s long wait for All-Ireland success. The Rebels haven’t won the Liam MacCarthy Cup since 2005.
He’ll name his backroom team in due course.
