The veteran Kerry footballer is included in a 20-man squad for upcoming training sessions next month as head coach Pete Strickland prepares for the 2018 Small Nations tournament.

Former Footballer of the Year Donaghy has been juggling commitments of the two sports and returned to top-tier basketball last year with Tralee Warriors – a club formed from an amalgamation between his local club St Brendan’s and Tralee Imperials.

At the end of January, Kingdom boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice told reporters that the 34-year-old is training with the inter-county panel but he has yet to feature this year.

Kieran Donaghy will be back with us,” said Fitzmaurice. “He is doing one session a week with us at the moment but he will be playing basketball in the immediate future.

“He might play a bit of football towards the end of the league but that has been the plan all along. He will be playing little or no football.”

Eight of the 12 Super League clubs are represented in the Ireland squad — four from Templeogue and UCC Demons, two from UCD Marian and Pyrobel Killester and one each from Tralee Warriors, Griffith Swords Thunder, SSE Airtricity Moycullen and Belfast Star.

There are also four players playing overseas: Jordan Blount (University of Illinois), Jordan Blount (University of Illinois), Cian Sullivan (La Salle University) and Paul Dick (most recently Fuenlabrada, Madrid).
