IT WAS A weekend where big statements were made by managers at Croke Park and both Kevin McStay and Kieran McGeeney can be satisfied with what they accomplished.

McStay’s Roscommon team pushed last year’s All-Ireland finalists Mayo to the wire yesterday to grab a draw with a replay date looming next Monday.

On Saturday night, Kieran McGeeney steered Armagh back to the All-Ireland quarter-final stage for the first time since 2014 when they upset beaten Leinster finalists Kildare.

Former Roscommon goalkeeper Shane Curran won an All-Ireland club medal with St Brigid’s under McStay’s tutelage in 2013.

Speaking on The42 GAA Show today, he praised the approach adopted by McStay this year with Roscommon and hopes the issues with some exiled players can be resolved to improve their squad in 2017.

“What I’ve been most impressed about it when we won the Connacht final, football was brought to the supporters, it was brought to the towns and villages. There was an openness and transparency about it.

“There was no hiding around corners and wondering are you going to have a pint here or can we have a pint. The players are encouraged to enjoy themselves.”

Curran also spoke of his admiration for McGeeney and revealed that the Armagh boss was a useful source of advice when Curran managed Roscommon club Padraig Pearses in recent seasons.
