2014 Kerry champions Austin Stacks dig deep to advance while Dr Crokes run riot

The Kerry senior football championship got underway today.

FIACHNA MANGAN STARRED as Austin Stacks eventually saw off East Kerry by five points in this afternoon’s Kerry senior football championship clash.

The 12-time winners were made to work for their 1-16 to 2-8 victory in Killarney as Mangan’s first-half goal proved crucial in recovering from a slow start.

East Kerry hit their opponents with two goals in quick succession through Jeff O’Donoghue and Ronan Buckley but the visitors soon clicked into gear and overturned the deficit.

They led by one point at the break and with nothing to separate the teams with 10 minutes to go, Mangan hit three late points as Stacks pulled clear.

In the second game of the day, Dr Crokes made light work of West Kerry at Lewis Road as they scored five goals in a comfortable victory.

The final scoreline was emphatic (5-19 to 1-9) but it was West Kerry who made a fast start as Sean O’Connor hit the net inside the opening minute.

But that was as good as it got for his side as goals from Gavin O’Shea and Tony Brosnan gave Dr Crokes a commanding 12-point half-time lead and they pushed on after the interval.

Jamie Doolan, Jason Lyne and Brosnan’s second completed the rout and ensured the 10-times winners a safe passage through.

The draw for Round 2 takes place tomorrow evening.

Saturday’s Kerry senior football championship, Round 1 results:

  • East Kerry 2-8 Austin Stacks 1-16
  • Dr Crokes 5-19 West Kerry 1-9
