Ireland U21 winger and Gareth Bale look-a-like finds a new home after leaving Spurs

Kenny McEvoy has joined York City after being left frustrated due to lack of opportunities at Tottenham.

IRELAND U21 INTERNATIONAL Kenny McEvoy has joined York City on a permanent basis after leaving Tottenham, it has been confirmed today.

The 21-year-old winger had been on the books at Spurs since 2011 but never made a first team appearance after loan spells with Peterborough United, Colchester United, Stevenage and, most recently, York City.

Waterford native McEvoy, who bares a striking resemblance to former Tottenham star Gareth Bale, has now rejoined League Two outfit York until the end of the season.

In a statement released via Twitter, he expressed his frustration at the lack of opportunities given to him at Spurs.

“I can now tell you that after five years at Tottenham today I am officially no longer a THFC player,” McEvoy said.

“In my own head I made the decision five months ago that I wanted to go elsewhere to start my career as a first team player as I did not see it happening at Tottenham no matter how much effort I gave it.

“I can’t thank my lawyer enough helping me to get out and Tottenham finally agreed a month ago to let me go.

“Thank you to my wife for putting up with my decision and all the rubbish in the meantime not knowing what’s happening and having to put her own life on hold but at least now it is down to me which is what I have always wanted.

“The decision was purely my own and wherever I go next I know that I will now be happy playing as a first team player and I’ll have the chance to prove people wrong that have ever doubted me.

“Thank you to the fans at Tottenham that did support me. I appreciate everyone of you. Let’s see where the future takes us.”

He also told York’s website that the influence of manager Jackie McNamara played a big part in his decision to return to the Minstermen.

He (Jackie McNamara) was a massive factor,” he said. “Knowing what he has done elsewhere showed me that he does give people a chance if they deserve it.

“I’ve just got to make sure that I’m one of those players by continuing to work hard and hopefully get into the first team.

It’s the real world and I am looking forward to seeing what I’m capable of in men’s football.

“I know I’m nowhere near the finished article yet though. I just need to keep working hard to improve every aspect of my game and then hopefully show what I can do by playing as many games as possible.”
