Robbie Keane's time as LA Galaxy designated player set to end - reports

It is uncertain whether the Dubliner will choose to extend his stay in the US.

ROBBIE KEANE’S TIME as one of LA Galaxy’s designated players is set to end, according to reports.

The Liverpool Echo reports that both Keane and Steven Gerrard’s status as designated players will come to end at the culmination of the current Major League Soccer season.

And while Gerrard is certain to depart the US according to the paper, Keane’s future is less clear cut.

MLS teams are allowed accommodate a maximum of three designated footballers, who are essentially star players considered outside of the league’s salary cap.

Keane, Gerrard and Giovani dos Santos are LA Galaxy’s current three designated players, though it is understood that only Dos Santos will be retained in this role next season, with the Californian side in the market for two new players to fill the vacancies.

Whether the Irish striker chooses to move on or stay and take a substantial salary cut is uncertain.

Gerrard’s time in America has been underwhelming, with injury problems contributing to some patchy performances.

Keane, on the other hand, has been a revelation since joining the club in 2011, and his goals-per-game ratio remains impressive, with the Dubliner scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances this season, meaning he has 83 goals in 125 appearances overall.
