Douglas wants out of Leinster but the province want compensation, and a lot of it

The Australian says he has struggled to settle into life in Ireland.

LEINSTER’S AUSTRALIAN SECOND row Kane Douglas has asked the province to grant him an early release from his contract as he looks to return home for family reasons.

The 26-year-old, who joined Leinster last year and has two seasons remaining on his contract, says he has struggled to settle in the Irish capital and is desperate to be closer to his family.

Douglas’ mother died in 2013 and he last week announced he and his fiancée were expecting their first child.

“There are a few things going on at home that I need to be there for,” he said in a statement.

“I didn’t think it would be this tough to be away from it all and I hope I can get back home real soon.

“It’s been a good time but also tough here and I have spoken to the club about what’s going on with my family and I have made it pretty clear that I want to get it sorted.”

Reports in Australia claim Douglas wants to sign for Queensland Reds as he looks to secure a place in Michael Cheika’s World Cup squad.

The 14-time capped Wallaby worked under Cheika at the New South Wales Waratahs before moving to Ireland.

Current rules mean he must be on the books at an Australian Super Rugby franchise to be eligible for the Wallabies at this year’s World Cup.

The Sydney Morning Herald report discussions have taken place between the player and Leinster and the province have received a formal request from the Australian Rugby Union to grant Douglas an early release.

However, Leinster are said to be holding out for a substantial compensation fee of €250,000 before any early release can be granted.
