JUSTIN THOMAS LAUNCHED his challenge at the Open in style on Thursday – sporting a cardigan and tie as he kicked off with a three-under-par 67 at Royal Birkdale.

The look isn’t completely unheard of – Ryan Moore is a big fan of the cardigan/tie combo – but Thomas’s wardrobe drew nearly as many comments as his play did.

The 23-year-old brushed it off after teeing himself up for a shot at his first Major win, sitting just two shots off clubhouse leaders Jordan Spieth and Brooks Kopeka.

“Obviously, I knew it was probably going to get a lot of publicity and be out there, but I didn’t come here to dress well,” Thomas said.

Jason Day was another man in the crosshairs of the traditionalists and the fashion police as he teed off wearing a pair of Jordan-inspired white Nike hi-tops.
