The curious case of Jonathan Benteke - who's remarkably made the Crystal Palace squad today

The 21-year-old was let go from Belgian side Zulte Waregem after being deemed surplus to requirements.

JONATHAN BENTEKE IS part of the Crystal Palace squad for their clash with Middlesbrough this afternoon and it’s been a strange few months for the 21-year-old.

The younger brother of Christian, the 21-year-old didn’t have a club for a while after his contract was terminated with Belgian side Zulte Waregem.

But he arrived at Palace around the same time as his older sibling made his big-money switch from Liverpool.

And, incredibly, Alan Pardew revealed that it was after Christian recommended his brother that the club went out and signed Jonathan.

“He is a young striker with natural talent, and they are not easy to find,” Pardew said.

This one was because of Christian, really. He highlighted him to us.”

It’s all very odd.

The younger Beneteke was deemed not good enough for the Belgian top-flight but now finds himself included in a Premier League squad.

The Times reported earlier this month that Jonathan was merely signed to help his brother settle at Selhurst Park.

But going by today’s developments, there’s more to the story.
