Wales have lost one of their key players for the Rugby World Cup

It’s a massive blow to Warren Gatland.

WALES WILL HAVE to plan without Jonathan Davies for the rest of the year.

It’s been confirmed that the 27-year-old centre ruptured his cruciate ligament while playing for Clermont Auvergne during their 29-17 win against Montpellier last Saturday.

Davies will undergo surgery in the coming days and the WRU expect him to be unavailable for six-to-seven months, which means he’ll miss this year’s World Cup.

Wales are in Pool A — alongside Australia and England — and they’ll begin their campaign against Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on 20 September.

“It’s a disappointment for Jonathan and for us, but the advice is for him to have the surgery straight away,” said Wales head coach Warren Gatland.

“Obviously the injury rules him out of the 2015 Rugby World Cup but our focus is his long-term career and we will be working closely with him during his recovery looking towards the 2016 RBS 6 Nations.”

Davies, a member of the British & Irish Lions squad in 2013, has scored 10 tries in 48 appearances for Wales.
