An incredible moment as cancer survivor Jonas Gutierrez ensures Newcastle's survival

The Argentine only made his first appearance of the season in March.

LESS THAN THREE MONTHS after making his first Newcastle appearance since recovering from testicular cancer, Jonas Gutierrez scored the goal that ensured the club’s Premier League survival.

The Magpies’ destiny was in their own hands and knew a decent result against West Ham would render anything relegation rivals Hull did against Manchester United irrelevant.

After a scoreless first-half, there were plenty of anxious faces at St. James’ Park, particularly with Hull dominating proceedings at the KC Stadium.

But within nine minutes of the restart, Newcastle did find a breakthrough with Moussa Sissoko connecting with a Gutierrez cross from the left to head home a priceless goal.

Still though, they needed to be sure and it was the Argentine who stepped up to the plate and delivered.

With five minutes to go, his strike took a deflection on its way and beat Adrian.

Cue wild scenes of jubilation as Gutierrez ripped his shirt off and ran to John Carver to celebrate.

The vital win ensured Newcastle finished the season in 15th place.
