JONAS GUTIERREZ WAS given a massive St James’ Park ovation as he returned to action against Manchester United this evening.
The Argentinian pulled on the black and white jersey for the first time in 17 months following a battle against testicular cancer.
Gutierrez, whose last appearance for the Magpies was in October 2013, was an unused sub against Aston Villa last weekend.
But he came off the bench for the final 25 minutes of Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat and was immediately given the captain’s armband.
He made an instant impact, picking up a booking within two minutes for a late tackle on Adnan Januzaj.
