Jon Jones to fight for interim title in new UFC 197 main event

UFC President Dana White announced the fight last night.

JON JONES WILL fight Ovince Saint Preux for an interim title at UFC 197 later this month after defending champion Daniel Cormier withdrew because of injury.

Former light heavyweight champion Jones was originally due renew his rivarly with Cormier but the 37-year-old American was forced to pull out after sustaining a shin injury.

After Jones posted a video on Instagram urging organisers to find him a replacement, UFC President Dana White last night announced the new main event for Las Vegas on 23 April.

The fight will be for the UFC interim light heavyweight title.

“Jon has never lost his title in the Octagon,” White said on ESPN. “He was stripped of his title because of problems outside. It was the right thing to do.. he will fight for the light heavyweight interim title.”

Jones’ involvement at the MGM Grand was cast into doubt earlier this week when he was arrested after traffic charges brought against him violated the terms of his probation.

The 28-year-old appeared in court where he was ordered to carry out 60 hours of community service as well as enlist in anger management and driver improvement classes.
