DUB SUB CONFIDENTIAL, John Leonard’s searingly honest memoir, has been named as the Setanta Sports Book of the Year.

The former Dublin goalkeeper will receive his prize in the Royal College of Physicians this afternoon after he topped the five-book shortlist for the inaugural award.

“I am delighted to win this award because it means I have been recognised by some of the best journalists in Ireland,” Leonard said.

“The quality of Irish sports writing is incredibly high and to come out on top this year makes me feel proud and privileged.

This is something I have worked very hard for so to win this award is a really special feeling.

Leonard wins a €1,500 cash prize as well as €10,000 worth of TV advertising on Setanta Sports and a specially commissioned trophy.

His memoir, which sets his GAA career alongside his personal journey from abuse and addiction to sobriety, was selected by the panel of seven judges.

The final shortlist also included ‘Until Victory Always’, Jim McGuinness’s acclaimed autobiography; ‘No Borders’ by Tom English; ‘Relentless’ by Mary White; and ‘Sport and Ireland’ by Paul Rouse.

“John’s prose and humanity carries you to the last page,” Ruth Hegarty of Publishing Ireland said.
