'l had to nearly hold back tears before the game' - Heslin pays tribute to UCD great Billings

John Heslin remembers the late Dave Billings after today’s victory.

WESTMEATH’S JOHN HESLIN was the star of the show today as he finally landed a coveted Sigerson Cup medal with UCD.

Heslin bagged 0-6 in a superb attacking show as he won the man-of-the-match award in UCD’s victory over DCU.

But Heslin was keen to remember those who had helped him and he paid an emotional tribute after the game to the late Dave Billings, the UCD GAA officer who passed away last April.

“There’s one man I have to mention before I go any further,” said the Mullingar native, when speaking to TG4 after the game.

“Dave Billings, I came into this college in 2009 and he treated me like nearly another son.

“l had to nearly hold back tears before the game. And I’d say every man in a UCD crest today would say the same.”

The death of Billings made today’s victory a poignant occasion as UCD ended their 20-year wait for a Sigerson Cup crown.
