The 50-year-old has come under pressure of late, with Newcastle just two points above the relegation zone after losing eight games on the trot, including last weekend’s dismal 3-0 loss to Leicester.

In Thursday’s press conference, he also produced a letter, said to be from club captain Fabricio Coloccini, encouraging fans to back the side in spite of recent problems at the club.
