IRELAND’S JOE WARD has won silver at the World Boxing Championships in Hamburg after he was beaten in this evening’s light heavyweight final by reigning Olympic champion Julio La Cruz of Cuba.

The 23-year-old Westmeath boxer had already made history at this tournament by becoming the first Irishman to ever reach two World Championships finals.
But, just as was the case in Doha two years ago, La Cruz was masterful in victory and Ward has to settle for a second World silver to add to his three European golds.
Although La Cruz went down in the opening round — adjudged to be a slip by the referee — the result was unanimous with Cruz winning 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 on the judges’ cards.
