The Portumna club man will skipper the Tribesmen as they bid to improve after a disappointing 2013 campaign.
St Thomas club man David Burke will be the vice-captain for Anthony Cunningham’s side. Burke is likely to captain Galway for the early rounds of next year’s Allianz hurling league as Canning will be tied up with club commitments with Portumna.
The Galway club recently won the county senior hurling championship and are preparing for an AIB All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Limerick’s Na Piarsaigh next February.

25 year-old Canning has been a member of the Galway senior panel since 2008. He has All-Ireland minor (2004 and 2005) and U21 medals (2007) to his name from an impressive underage career.
In 2010 he won a National hurling league medal and last year won a Leinster senior hurling medal. All-Ireland senior honours have so far eluded Canning who has won three Allstars in his career in 2008, 2009 and 2012.
