JASON DAY HELD his nerve and an overnight lead to claim victory by four shots at the Players Championship in Sawgrass tonight.
The Australian carried a four-shot lead into the fourth round in Florida. Despite picking up bogeys to make the turn two over par, the regular major contender corrected the errors with birdies on 10, 12 and 16 to maintain his advantage over the chasing Justin Thomas and Matt Kuchar to seal the tournament commonly known as ‘the fifth major’ with a score of -15.
However, the Faithful’s resurgence could only inspire Lowry to a -1 round of 71 with bogeys at the tail end of the front and back nine weighing down his superb stretch of three straight early birdies on two, three and four.

Graeme McDowell instead rose to be ‘best of the Irish’ thanks to a sensational back nine contained five birdies – including a scorching run on 16, 17 and 18 – gave him a -3 69 for Sunday and seventh place with a final score of nine under par.
Rory McIlroy finished up two shots back from his fellow Northern Irishman in a tie for 12th. The 27-year-old made the turn at -2, but balanced out further birdies on 11 and 18 with bogeys on 13 and 15.
