The outside centre picked up the injury during Ireland’s win over Romania. Head coach Joe Schmidt had hoped to see Payne make a comeback this weekend against France, but his injury only worsened.

The Ulsterman trained with Ireland on Wednesday in Newport High School, but the foot injury swelled up badly afterwards. Following a scan, it has now been confirmed that Payne’s foot is fractured.

Ireland say they will not make a decision on a replacement for Payne until after Sunday’s clash with France in the Millennium Stadium.

Keith Earls starts in the 13 shirt against the French this weekend in Payne’s absence.
