Bruised foot keeping Jared Payne out of Ireland training

The Ulster back is nursing a bruised foot this week.

Sean Farrell reports from Guildford

IRELAND BACK JARED Payne has emerged as a doubt for Ireland’s World Cup Pool D meeting with Italy on Sunday.

Payne sat out training today with a bruised foot and, with tomorrow being the team’s rest day, training sessions are limited before Sunday’s clash of Six Nations sides.

“No he didn’t train,” scrum coach Greg Feek said of the Ulster back.

“He’s got a bit of a bruise, so he didn’t train. We’ll see how he goes over the rest of the week and then maybe.

“It’s just a bruise to the foot.”

The recovering Rob Kearney appears to be Ireland’s only other concern after suffering a strained glute. However, the fullback trained as planned in Surrey today.

“Most of the guys got out and trained. We’ll see how they come up. If guys have had niggles they get through this afternoon and then get assessed in the morning. Then, selection is from there.

“Rob ran around and a few other guys are looking good too. So fingers crossed for the rest of the week that we can go in to Italy with a full squad to choose from.”
