'It tastes like Ribena to me': Jamie Vardy on drinking lots of port the night before games

The Leicester attacker was downing 250ml while watching television.

JAMIE VARDY’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY hits the shops next week and the excerpts released in the last few days have certainly been entertaining.

The Leicester City attacker already revealed how he grew particularly fond of sipping from a three-litre vodka bottle that he’d poured Skittles into.

Probably not the best way of recovering from a dead leg.

And another alcohol-related anecdote crops up in the latest extract from the book.

Vardy says that he began drinking port on the eve of games last season after growing superstitious owing to his excellent form.

“I can’t say why it started because I genuinely don’t know but I decided to drink a glass of port on the eve of every game in the 2015-2016 season.

I’m not normally superstitious but from the moment I scored against Sunderland on the opening day, I didn’t want anything to change.

I fill a small plastic or Lucozade bottle to halfway and and just sip the port while watching television.

It tastes like Ribena to me, and it helps me switch off and get to sleep a bit easier the night before a game.”

But, half a Lucozade bottle is 250ml. And that amounts to five doubles of port.

It’s little wonder that Vardy was finding it easier to sleep. It’s a miracle he was able to wake up the following morning.
