The moment Jamie Vardy scored a stunner against United... way back in 2009

The Leicester attacker was deep in the world of non-league football at the time.

LONG BEFORE JAMIE VARDY was one of the most-feared attackers in Europe, he was just another young man trying to deal with some early rejection.

He was released by Sheffield Wednesday as a teenager and slowly rebuilt his confidence at non-league Stocksbridge Park Steels FC – they of the Northern Premier Division One.

He enjoyed a terrific time with the senior side and there was interest from a number of Football League clubs. But, the youngster remained at the club for three seasons.

In 2009, he was involved in a game against FC United of Manchester, the organisation formed by Manchester United fans who disagreed with Malcolm Glazer’s takeover 10 years ago.

And that day, Vardy conjured the type of strike we’ve come to associate with him this season.

It’s difficult to fathom why it took a bigger club so long to secure his services.
